What Causes This Problem?
At a steady throttle, the engine runs on tight fuel-trim control and (in automatics) the torque converter clutch is often partially or fully locked. If airflow, fuel, or spark isn’t clean, the ECU constantly corrects—felt as a light surge/jerk. Likewise, a slipping or shuddering TCC introduces a rapid on/off coupling sensation right at cruise speeds.
